Breakdown cover renewal creeping up? How to pay less

Breakdown cover renewal creeping up? Check you’re not already covered elsewhere, then quote as a new customer and make your provider match it.

Breakdown cover may be the purest auto-renewal business in the UK: nobody thinks about it until the hard shoulder, the renewal drifts up a few pounds every year, and the same company sells the same patrols to new customers at a fraction of the price.

First: are you paying for it twice?

Check these before any comparison site — a surprising share of households can cancel rather than switch:

  • Packaged bank account — the monthly-fee accounts frequently bundle full breakdown cover for the account holder.
  • Car insurance add-on — often ticked in year one and silently renewed since.
  • Manufacturer cover — newer cars and approved-used schemes commonly include roadside assistance, sometimes renewed free with each service.
Watch out. Duplicate cover doesn’t give you double service — it just means one of the premiums is pure waste. Pick the best single source and cancel the rest.

If you do need standalone cover

  1. 1
Quote as a new customerGet the new-customer price for your exact cover level — from your current provider and one or two rivals. The gap versus your renewal letter is your negotiating room.
  2. 2
Call and ask them to match itRetention teams can usually apply a discount close to the new-customer rate. If they won’t, switching is painless — there’s no claims history to lose.
  3. 3
Right-size the extrasHome start earns its keep for most families; onward travel and European cover only if your driving actually looks like that.

In short

Check bank account, car insurance and manufacturer cover for duplication first; then never pay the renewal price for cover the same company sells cheaper to strangers. A ten-minute call most years — which is exactly why the renewal date deserves a reminder.

Frequently asked questions

Where might I already have breakdown cover?

Packaged bank accounts (the monthly-fee kind) very often include it; car insurance policies sell it as an add-on that ticks along unnoticed; new and approved-used cars frequently include a year or more of manufacturer cover. Check all three before paying for standalone cover.

Personal cover or vehicle cover — which do I need?

Vehicle cover protects one car whoever drives it; personal cover protects a person in any car, including as a passenger. A two-car household is sometimes cheaper on one personal policy than two vehicle policies — compare both shapes.

Do I need home start and onward travel?

Home start (they come to your driveway) is the add-on most claims actually use — batteries die at home. Onward travel (hire car/hotel) matters mainly for long-distance drivers. National recovery is the core; add the rest deliberately rather than by default.

Is cheaper cover worse when I actually break down?

The big providers reach most breakdowns in broadly comparable times, and smaller brands often subcontract to the same local recovery networks. Read the response and recovery terms rather than assuming price equals speed.
