What happens if your MOT runs out?

An MOT is the annual test that confirms your car meets road-safety and environmental standards. Once it expires, your legal position changes immediately — here’s exactly what happens and how to stay on the right side of it.

You can’t legally drive (with one exception)

From the moment your MOT expires, driving the car on public roads is illegal and you can be fined up to £1,000. There is one important exception:

If your car is caught without a valid MOT outside those exceptions, you risk the fine — and potentially penalty points if the vehicle is also found to be dangerous.

It knocks on to your tax and insurance

An expired MOT rarely stops at the fine. Two things usually follow:

   You can’t tax the carYou need a valid MOT to renew your vehicle tax. Let the MOT lapse and you can’t re-tax — so you risk an untaxed-vehicle penalty too.

   Your insurance may be voidMany policies require a valid MOT. Without one, a claim could be refused and you may be driving uninsured — a far more serious offence.

How to avoid it

The simplest fix is to treat the MOT as a fixed annual date and get it done early.
