Privacy Policy

DueOwl helps UK families keep track of their renewals and documents. Privacy is the core of the product, not an afterthought. This policy explains — in plain English — what happens to your information.

The short version

• Your documents never reach us. We never receive, see, or store your documents, renewal details or personal information.
• Your data stays in your own iCloud. Everything you add — items, documents, lists, events — is stored on your device and in your own iCloud account through Apple’s iCloud/CloudKit. It is your storage, controlled by your Apple ID.
• Processing happens on your device. Reading a document (text recognition and field extraction) and searching inside your documents is done entirely on your iPhone. Nothing is uploaded for processing.
• Only anonymous counts reach us. From version 1.0.8 the app counts things like “a document was added to Insurance” — with no names, titles, amounts, files or anything that identifies you or your household. You can turn this off in the app at any time. Details below.
• No tracking, no ads. No advertising identifiers and no third-party tracking or analytics SDKs in the app. (This website uses one optional analytics cookie — see below.)

Information DueOwl handles

• Documents and renewal details you add (e.g. insurance, MOT, council tax, TV licence, passports): stored on your device and synced to your own iCloud. We have no access to them.
• Sign in with Apple: when you create a household, Apple provides your name so DueOwl can label you in it. We request your name only — not your email — and it stays on your device. We do not receive your Apple ID. (A partner who joins your household with your invite doesn’t need to sign in.)
• Sharing with your partner: if you invite another parent, your household data is shared between your two iCloud accounts using Apple’s CloudKit sharing. The shared data lives in your iCloud accounts; it does not pass through us.
• Notifications: renewal reminders are scheduled locally on your device. To let the app notify your partner when you’re not both online, DueOwl uses Apple’s CloudKit push — delivered by Apple, not by us. The reminder content stays on your devices.

What we do NOT do

• We do not collect, sell, or share your personal information.
• We do not use your data for advertising or profiling.
• We do not send your documents or details to any server we run, or to any third party, for any purpose.

DueOwl works fully offline except for iCloud sync between your own devices and your partner’s (and, if you leave them on, the anonymous usage counts, which simply wait until you’re back online).

Anonymous usage counts (app version 1.0.8 and later)

To see which parts of DueOwl families actually use — and fix the parts they don’t — the app sends a small number of anonymous counts. This is what they contain, completely:

• What happened: a document added, an item added, subscriptions added or edited, a search made, setup finished, a partner joined, the Pro screen shown.
• A category from a fixed list (for example “insurance” or “vehicle”). If you created your own category, we only see the word “custom” — never its name.
• Whether a document came in through the Share button (WhatsApp, Mail, Files) or was scanned or picked inside the app; whether it was the household’s first document; whether a search found anything.
• How long the household has existed, in broad bands (first day, first week, first month, older) and the app version.

Never included: names, titles, providers, amounts, dates, notes, file names, document text, search words, your location, or any identifier. Nothing links one count to another, to your device, to you or to your household.

• On by default, off in one tap: Settings → Privacy & backup → Anonymous usage counts. Turning it off stops sending immediately and deletes any counts still waiting on your phone.
• Why we may do this without asking first: UK law allows counting how a service is used, solely to improve it, as long as you are told clearly and can object for free (the “statistical purposes” exception in the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, Schedule A1). This notice and the switch above are how we meet that.
• Where it goes: to a database run for us by Supabase (acting only on our instructions) in London, UK. Raw counts are deleted after 90 days; we keep only totals. As with any website, Supabase’s security logs may briefly record the connecting IP address — we don’t use it, and it is never stored with the counts.

Deleting your data

You can permanently delete all of your DueOwl data at any time from Settings → Delete all my data. This removes every item, document, list and event from your device and your iCloud. You can also manage or delete your iCloud data from your device’s iCloud settings.

Third parties

The DueOwl app relies on Apple iCloud/CloudKit to store and sync your data within your own Apple account(s). Apple’s handling of that data is governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy. The app’s only other service is the anonymous usage counts described above, stored for us by Supabase in London. The app integrates no other third-party services. This website uses Google Analytics with your consent, as described above.

This website (dueowl.com)

This website uses Google Analytics to understand which guides and tools help families most — pages visited, and where visitors came from (for example a search engine or a link). We use it to make the site better; we run no advertising and never sell or share this data.

• Only with your consent. Analytics cookies are set only after you tap “OK” on the cookie notice. If you decline, no analytics cookies are set and your visit stays cookie-free.
• You can change your mind. Clearing this site’s data in your browser resets your choice.
• Google’s processing is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy.

The site also uses Vercel Web Analytics, provided by our hosting company, to count page views and see which site or assistant sent a visitor here. It sets no cookies and builds no cross-site identifier: a visitor is a hashed value that expires within a day. See Vercel's analytics privacy notes.

None of this touches the DueOwl app — the app’s only counts are the anonymous ones described above.

Children

DueOwl is intended for adults managing a household. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from children.

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date above.
