Can you get an MOT early without losing time?

You can MOT a car up to a month (minus a day) early and keep the renewal date. How the rule works and when an early test makes sense.

“Shall I book it now or wait until the week it runs out?” Early — as long as you’re inside the window — is strictly better, and the rule that makes it free is worth knowing precisely.

The rule

  • Within a month (minus a day) of expiry: the pass is dated from your old expiry — same anniversary next year.
  • Earlier than that: the pass runs 12 months (minus a day) from the test date — anniversary moves earlier.

Why early wins

  1. 1
Failure becomes a to-do, not a crisisA fail with three weeks of valid MOT left means booking repairs calmly. A fail on expiry day means an undriveable school run tomorrow.
  2. 2
You choose the garage and the weekLast-minute MOTs go wherever has a slot. Early ones go where you actually trust — and outside half-term chaos.
  3. 3
The paperwork stays alignedInsurance, tax and MOT dates drift apart over the years. Testing early inside the window keeps the anniversary fixed, so reminders stay true.
Watch out. One caveat on early tests: if the car fails with a dangerous defect, it must not be driven until repaired — even if the old certificate hasn’t expired. An early test doesn’t revive a car found dangerous today.

The two-minute setup

Check your current expiry on GOV.UK’s free MOT checker (registration is all you need), then set a reminder for five weeks before — that lands you at the start of the keep-your-date window with time to book. Do it once for every car in the household; the second car is always the one that slips.

In short

Book inside the month-minus-a-day window: same renewal date, fresh certificate, and failures become fixable instead of stranding. Five-week reminder, then it runs itself.

Frequently asked questions

How does the month-minus-a-day window work in practice?

If your MOT expires on 15 October, any test from 16 September onwards preserves the 15 October anniversary. The garage’s system handles it automatically — you don’t need to ask for anything special.

What happens if my car fails the early MOT?

This is the whole point of testing early: your existing certificate is still valid until its original expiry (assuming the car isn’t found dangerous), so you have time to repair and retest without being off the road. Fail on the last day instead and the car may be unusable overnight.

Is there a maximum MOT price?

Yes — DVSA caps the fee (currently £54.85 for a car), and many garages charge less. Retests within 10 working days at the same garage are often free or reduced.

What if I test way too early?

Nothing bad — the car just gets a fresh 12-month certificate and your renewal date moves. That can even be deliberate, e.g. aligning the MOT with a service or with the road tax date so the car has one ‘admin month’.
