Pet insurance renewals: what to watch for

Pet insurance is usually annual — but the type of policy matters hugely at renewal, especially for ongoing conditions. Here’s what to check.

Pet insurance looks like a simple annual renewal, but the policy type is where families get caught out — especially once a pet has needed treatment.

Renewal basics

Most pet policies run for 12 months and renew annually. The premium usually climbs as your pet gets older, and again after claims. That’s expected — so at renewal, focus on whether the cover still fits, not just the price.

The pre-existing condition trap

Watch out. If your pet has an ongoing condition, switching insurer to save money usually means the new policy treats it as pre-existing and won’t cover it. The saving can cost you far more later.

This is why the policy type matters more than the headline price:

Policy typeWhat it does at renewal
LifetimeKeeps covering ongoing conditions each year you renew, up to a yearly limit
Non-lifetime (per-condition / time-limited)May stop covering a condition after a money or time limit is reached
Good to know. This is general information, not personalised advice. Read the policy wording and consider your pet’s specific needs — and check current terms with the insurer.

In short

Pet insurance renews yearly and gets pricier with age. Before switching to save money, check whether your pet has conditions a new insurer would exclude as pre-existing — a lifetime policy you keep renewing is often what protects ongoing treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pet insurance get more expensive each year?

Premiums usually rise as pets age and become more likely to need treatment — and again if they’ve had claims. That’s normal; the question at renewal is whether the cover still fits, not just the price.

Should I switch pet insurer to save money?

Be careful. If your pet has an ongoing condition, a new insurer will typically treat it as pre-existing and exclude it. Switching to save a few pounds can leave the most important thing uncovered.

What’s a lifetime policy?

A lifetime policy renews each year and keeps covering ongoing (chronic) conditions up to a yearly limit, as long as you keep renewing. Non-lifetime policies may stop covering a condition after a time or money limit.
