Is boiler cover worth it?
Boiler and home emergency cover can save a big repair bill — but it often overlaps with your home insurance. Here’s how to decide without paying twice.
On this page
A boiler breakdown in winter is exactly the kind of bill people insure against — but boiler cover is also one of the easiest things to end up paying for twice.
Check what you already have first
When it tends to be worth it
Boiler cover makes most sense when:
- Your boiler is older and out of warranty, and
- A sudden repair or replacement bill would be hard to absorb.
For a new boiler under warranty, or if you could comfortably cover a repair yourself, the case is weaker.
The self-insure alternative
In short
Boiler cover can save a nasty repair bill, but it often overlaps with home emergency cover in your insurance or a new boiler’s warranty — so check those first. It’s most worth it for older, out-of-warranty boilers where a sudden bill would hurt.
Frequently asked questions
Does home insurance already cover my boiler?
Sometimes. Some home insurance policies include ‘home emergency’ cover that helps with a broken boiler, and buildings insurance may cover damage the breakdown causes. Check your existing policy before buying separate boiler cover — you may be paying twice.
Is boiler cover worth it for a new boiler?
Often not straight away. A new boiler is usually under a manufacturer’s warranty for several years, which covers breakdowns. Separate cover tends to make more sense once the warranty ends and the boiler is older.
What’s the alternative to boiler cover?
Some people self-insure: set aside what they’d pay in premiums and use it for repairs or an annual service. That works if you could comfortably absorb a sudden bill; if not, cover buys certainty.
