Boiler cover renewal gone up? Your three real options

Boiler cover renewal gone up? New-customer prices are often far lower for the same cover. How to compare, haggle or switch without a gap.

Boiler cover is sold on one image: a freezing house, a small child, and an engineer who comes tonight. That image is worth something — the question each renewal is how much, compared with the alternatives.

First, the duplication check

Before comparing boiler policies at all, check whether you already have home emergency cover through your home insurance add-ons or a packaged bank account — and whether your boiler is young enough to be under manufacturer warranty (often 5–10 years when serviced annually by the book). Any of those makes standalone cover partly or wholly redundant.

The three options, honestly

  1. 1
Haggle the renewalGet the same provider’s new-customer quote for identical cover, ring retentions, ask them to match. Ten minutes; works more often than not.
  2. 2
SwitchMind the joins: a no-claims window at the start (don’t switch mid-winter with a rattling boiler), boiler-age limits, and whether the annual service is included — that service is £80–£120 of real value.
  3. 3
Self-insureBook an annual service directly with a Gas Safe engineer and move the monthly premium into a savings pot. After two quiet years the pot rivals the cost of most repairs.
Watch out. Whatever you choose, the annual service itself is non-negotiable — it keeps the boiler safe and efficient, and skipping it can void both manufacturer warranties and cover policies. The service is the constant; the question is only who arranges and prices it.
Good to know. This is general information, not personalised financial advice — weigh your boiler’s age, your winter tolerance and your emergency fund honestly.

In short

Check for duplicate cover and live warranties first. Then: match-or-switch if you want the certainty, or service + repair fund if the boiler’s trustworthy. The only losing move is paying the drifted renewal without asking anything.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my renewal go up when I never claimed?

Boiler cover leans on the same renewal-inertia model as breakdown cover: introductory pricing for new customers, drift for renewals. Your claim history matters less than your willingness to look elsewhere.

What should I check before switching?

Boiler age limits (many policies exclude or restrict boilers over ~7–15 years), the initial no-claims period (often 14–30 days), whether an annual service is included, call-out limits, and the excess per claim. The cheapest policy with a service included can beat a dearer one without.

When does self-insuring make sense?

Newer boiler still under manufacturer warranty (some run 5–10 years if serviced annually): cover largely duplicates the warranty. Reliable mid-life boiler: a serviced boiler plus a growing repair fund often beats years of premiums. Old, temperamental boiler in a cold-vulnerable household: cover’s speed and certainty can be worth the drift.

Doesn’t my home insurance already include this?

Sometimes — home emergency cover is a common add-on to home insurance, and some packaged bank accounts include it. Check before paying for a standalone policy; duplicated cover is pure waste.
