Left your passport renewal too late before a holiday?

You’ve found the passport, it’s expired (or nearly), and the flight is in a fortnight. There are official fast routes — but each has a fee, an eligibility rule and a clock. Here is exactly what they are, in the order you should think about them.

The two urgent services

For comparison, a standard renewal is £102 (adult) or £66.50 (child) online and usually arrives within 3 weeks — but with no guaranteed date, which is why GOV.UK says not to book travel until the passport is in your hand.

Do this now — in this order

   Pick the service that fits8+ days: 1 week Fast Track (anyone). Under ~8 days and it’s an adult renewal: 1 Day Premium. Under a week for a child: there is no official service fast enough — go to step 5.

   Apply online and grab the earliest appointmentYou need the old passport, a digital photo that meets the rules, and a payment card. Slots are released in batches and go quickly in spring and summer — check several passport offices, not just the nearest.

   Attend with everythingTake the old passport and any supporting documents. A rejected photo at the counter costs you the slot.

   If no appointment works: change the trip, not the rulesTalk to the airline and holiday company today. Some will move dates for a fee; travel insurance almost never covers a passport you forgot to renew.

The validity trap: in date isn’t always enough

Even with a passport in hand, three rules catch families at the airport:

• EU / Schengen: the passport must be less than 10 years old on the day you enter and valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. Passports issued before September 2018 could run for 10 years and up to 9 months, so a passport that says it expires next year may already fail the 10-year test.
• Many other countries (Turkey, Egypt, Thailand, the UAE and more) require 6 months’ validity on arrival.
• Travel authorisations (US ESTA, and similar schemes) are tied to the passport number — a renewed passport has a new number, so the authorisation must be redone.

For a child

The only urgent route for a child is the 1 week Fast Track (£156.50). Someone with parental responsibility applies and attends; a first child passport also needs a countersignatory, so line that up before the appointment. Money: what a late renewal actually costs

The premium over a timely renewal is £90–£137 per passport. For a family of four with two expired passports, that’s a weekend away. The cheapest fast-track is the one you never need.
